About Marbella and surrounding area:

Property in Marbella

View of the harbour of Marbella and the illuminated properties

Often called "The Pearl of the Costa del Sol" Marbella, the former "White Village" is one of the most attractive places on the Andalusian sun coast. "Que mar bella" - "what a beautiful sea", the Castilian queen Isabella is said to have exclaimed, when she traveled to this part of her empire 500 years ago, and the magnificent coastal landscape still inspires visitors, particularly those from the cool northern hemosphere.

Not too humid and not too dry, with no less than 2900 hours of sunshine a year and balanced temperatures, the much-acclaimed climate of the "Spanish Riviera" is very accommodating for a feeling of wellbeing. Sunbathing on the beach or sitting outside with a café con Leche in a street cafe is not unusual even in deepest January, and a fresh sea breeze provides refreshment in the summer.

With a current population of around 138,000, Marbella is certainly no longer a village but the modern city centre has been preserved as the "Pueblo Blanco", the "white village" it once was. Above the "Avenida Ramón y Cajal" the "Casco Antiguo", the picturesque old town, extends alongside the old city walls built by the Moors in the 9th century.

Alleys in the old town of Marbella

Strolling through the winding, flower-adorned alleys you sooner or later enter the "showpiece" of Marbella, the "Plaza de los Naranjos". In the early spring its bitterorange trees emit a bewitching flowery fragrance and bring soothing shade to the numerous open-air cafés. The secluded plaza is framed mainly by historical buildings dating from the time shortly after the "Reconquista", the re-conquest of "Al-Andaluz" by the Christians in the late 15th century. At first, the Christian conquerors built a small chapel called "Ermita de Santiago", and later the rustic "Casa del Corregidor" ("House of the Bailiff") and the elegant "Casa Consistorial" ("Town Hall"), prestigious stately buildings in the Renaissance style.

As in many other places in Spain there is no shortage of churches – particularly pretty is the church tower of the chapel "Santo Cristo de la Veracruz", covered with white-and-blue glazed tiles ("Azulejos"). The Baroque interior of the main church "Iglesia de Nuestra Sra. de la Encarnación" offers religious services and classical concerts in a very special atmosphere.

Also in the old town the ''Palacio de Bazán'' Renaissance palace, once used as a hospital, houses the "Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo" with its impressive collection of prints. The works of renowned Spanish artists such as Goya, Picasso, Dalí or Miró can be admired here with lithographs, woodcuts and etchings. With the Arabian city wall and the Castillo, also built by the Moors, Marbella still possesses modest relicts of this culturally rich era but the much more spectacular Alhambra of Granada can be reached in about 2 hours by car, and is well within a day's excursion.

Marbella owes a large part of its appeal to sun-starved northern Europeans to its beautiful and carefully maintained beaches which, outside the city, even have small sand dunes. And even in the central part of the city beautifully landscaped beach areas such as the "Playa de Venus" offer refreshment after a stroll in the city.

Those who prefer peace and quiet walk along the beach promenade "Paseo Marítimo" past Puerto Banús to Playa de la Fontanilla. Instead of large-scale apartment blocks, beach restaurants as well as noble hotels and villas in extensive green areas determine the picture. Fortunately, a coastline of several metres in width is accessible by law for everyone all over Spain.

Marbella Club

Even exquisite luxury hotels such as the famous "Marbella Club" are not allowed to block their beach section for "normal" people. In this hotel the now deceased Prince Alfons von Hohenlohe founded the reputation of Marbellas as a winter resort and playground of the rich and famous. At the legendary parties, celebrities such as Gunilla von Bismarck, Sean Connery, Julio Iglesias and many others took part, and even today the rich and the beautiful still prefer to visit "their" Marbella".

Particularly attractive is the neighbouring town of Puerto Banús with its impressive luxury yacht harbour, where onlookers with camera s at the ready wait for the famous jet setters.

Golf on the Costa del Sol

Not for nothing is the official nickname of the Costa del Sol, "Costa del Golf", and there is hardly any other spot in the world with a similar collection of golf courses as on the coastal strip between Málaga and Gibraltar.

Even within a radius of 20 kms around Marbella the passionate golfer can choose between no less than 32 well-kept facilities including ones with magnificent views of the coastal mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Marbella is also an ideal location for excursions, for example to the pulsating metropolis of Málaga blessed with numerous sights, the British-governed rock of Gibraltar or the enchanting Ronda country estate, spectacularly situated above a deep ravine - all of these destinations can be reached in less than an hour by car.

Restaurant-tips from our real estate agents in Marbella

In addition to internationally renowned nobel restaurants in Marbella there are also many local tapas bars and cafes mainly frequented by locals and which often offer tasty, country-style dishes at reasonable prices.
